Secrets to Aging Well: Combat Oxidative Stress & Slow the Clock
Aging is inevitable. How well your cells hold up along the way is a different question, and a lot of that answer comes down to something called oxidative stress.
If you've read my post on inflamm-aging, you already know inflammation is one major driver of how fast the body shows its age. Oxidative stress is its close cousin, related, often tangled up with inflammation, but mechanistically its own thing. This one's worth understanding on its own terms, because there's a toolkit here most people have never even heard of for supporting how your cells function at a much deeper level.
WHAT OXIDATIVE STRESS ACTUALLY IS
Free radicals are unstable molecules your body produces naturally as a byproduct of normal cell metabolism. Antioxidants exist to neutralize them. Oxidative stress happens when free radicals start outnumbering the antioxidants available to keep them in check, and the excess starts damaging DNA, proteins, and cell membranes.
This isn't just a skin-deep story about wrinkles. Left unchecked, this cellular damage accumulates and contributes to the biological processes behind heart disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers. And it feeds directly into the inflammation cycle I covered in the inflamm-aging post. Each one tends to make the other worse.
WHAT DRIVES IT
Free radical production ramps up in response to a handful of common modern exposures, and some of them hide in places you wouldn't expect.
Environmental toxins. Pollution and pesticides are the obvious ones, but endocrine-disrupting chemicals, EDCs, found in everyday household and personal care products, plastics, fragrance, certain cleaning products, add their own steady drip of oxidative burden. Most people are exposed to dozens of these daily without ever clocking it.
Mold and water-damaged buildings. Living or working in a water-damaged environment is an underappreciated source of chronic oxidative and inflammatory load. This one's sneaky because the exposure itself is often invisible, and the resulting fatigue, brain fog, or sinus symptoms get chalked up to everything except the actual cause.
Diet. A diet heavy in processed food and added sugar consistently ramps up oxidative activity.
UV exposure. Unprotected sun exposure increases free radical production in the skin specifically.
Chronic and stealth infections. This is a big one that rarely makes it into aging content. Overt infections tax the body obviously, but stealth or reactivated infections, think Epstein-Barr, Lyme and related tickborne illness, or chronic low-grade viral activity, can keep the immune system engaged long-term in ways that quietly drive oxidative stress without an obvious acute illness to point to.
The pace of modern life itself. Smoking, heavy alcohol use, and chronic psychological stress all contribute, but so does the less dramatic version: constant notifications, a nervous system that never fully downshifts, and a baseline level of stimulation the human body was never designed to sustain around the clock.
If several of these sound familiar from the inflammation conversation, that's not a coincidence. Oxidative stress and inflammation largely share the same underlying terrain, they're just responding to it through different mechanisms. Exposures like mold or stealth infections in particular often go undetected on standard labs, and usually require more specialized functional medicine testing to actually uncover.

Here's the part that makes oxidative stress its own conversation. Your mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside nearly every cell, are especially vulnerable to oxidative damage. Quercetin and zinc bring both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support, adding another layer of protection alongside the others on this list.

One nuance specific to oxidative stress worth flagging: exercise is protective in moderation, but excessive, poorly recovered training can actually increase oxidative load rather than reduce it. More is not automatically better here. And moderate looks different on every body. Aging well was never about pushing past what your body can actually recover from.
